AI-Generated Drug Enters Human Clinical Trials: A Promise or a Premise?

It seems that AI has broken new ground once again. This time, it's not about outsmarting humans at chess or predicting the weather, but it's ventured into something a bit more... alive.

Insilico Medicine, a biotech startup from Hong Kong, has become a pioneer in introducing a drug fully created by artificial intelligence into human clinical trials. The drug was developed to combat idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), a rather unwelcome guest that currently resides in the lungs of about 100,000 U.S. citizens.

While we've seen AI dip its toes in various fields, its full dive into drug design is an exciting stroke. Insilico's CEO, Alex Zhavoronkov, proclaims their achievement as the first to enter Phase II clinical trials designed and targeted by AI.

The AI 'Doctored' Drugs in the Pipeline

And if you thought AI had only one trick up its sleeve, you'd be surprised. Insilico is also advancing two other drugs partially orchestrated by AI. One is aiming to join the arsenal against Covid-19, while the other is a cancer combatant set to take on solid tumors. And the latter just received its ticket to commence clinical trials from the FDA.

As for the IPF drug, the current Phase II study is a 12-week, randomized, placebo-controlled trial. It will soon expand to include 60 subjects across 40 sites in the U.S. and China. Zhavoronkov is optimistic, expecting results from the current phase next year and hoping that the drug will be ready to benefit patients within a few years.
